This is the blog of James Scotney, Town and Country Law director. This blog will explore various aspects of Mr Scotney’s professional life and personal interests, covering a range of topics including dementia, lasting power of attorney, heart health awareness, will writing and mini strokes.
Dementia
The term ‘dementia’ refers to a set of symptoms that over time can affect problem-solving, memory, behaviour and language. The most common type of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease. Dementia is caused by a disease that damages the brain’s nerve cells; as more cells sustain damage, the brain becomes progressively less able to work properly.

Lasting Power of Attorney
Lasting power of attorney is one of the areas in which Town and Country Law specialises. This facility helps individuals safeguard their future in the event that they become physically or mentally incapacitated and in a position where their interests are potentially at risk – or if they are unable to administer their interests for an extended period of time. A lasting power of attorney can be established that can only be brought into effect should mental capacity be lost, meaning that no one else can make decisions on the individual’s behalf until the appropriate time.

Heart Health
A mini stroke (transient ischaemic attack) is caused when the blood supply to part of the brain is temporarily disrupted. This disruption results in a lack of oxygen to the brain which causes symptoms similar to those of a stroke, such as visual and speech disturbance and weakness or numbness in the face, legs and arms. These effects last from a few minutes to a few hours, resolving fully within 24 hours.
